Rather than heading out into the city to spend a lot of money on summer activities, get your backyard set up this year to house fun in the sun at a fraction of the cost. Best of all, you can set up your backyard to foster family fun as well as friendly gatherings with your peers. You’ll just need a few supplies to get your backyard set for memories you and your friends will not soon forget.

Supplies You’ll Need

Invest a few weekends at the start of the summer in gathering the supplies you’ll need to set up a great backyard, and take a few days to install, put them together, and decorate. You don’t need a lot to have a beautiful backyard – if you’ve got a pond, invest in the supplies you’ll need to keep it fresh, moving, and lively. Swallow Aquatics has just about everything you’ll need. Invest in some quality patio furniture, or refurbish what you have to give it a fresh look. Put in a few beautiful plants, and shine up that grill. Mow the lawn to create a big space for the kids to run and play, and you’re ready to start your summer activities.

Summer Potluck

Go for parties that are laid-back and low-key. Not only will it help you feel less overwhelmed at the prospect of hosting a gathering, but it will also put your friends at ease. Summer is a time for kicking back, enjoying the outdoors, and catching up with friends. Match your gatherings to this mentality. Ask each friend who comes to bring a side dish while you provide items to grill, or you provide the side dishes, and ask your friends to bring their own meat. Or, host a party after dinner and ask everyone to bring a favorite dessert. Be sure to pull out the citronella candles to ward off bugs, and if you live in a climate that gets cold at night, provide a fire in a nice fire pit, or throw blankets.

Water Activities

Send your kids into the backyard, and keep them busy for hours by creating a simple water obstacle course. The great thing about water is that you don’t need to spend a lot of money on fancy equipment to keep the kids entertained. Set up a sprinkler, a kiddy pool, a makeshift beach in the sandbox, and provide some squirt guns. Set the kids loose and let them play to their hearts’ content.
